Advantages of Oriental Medicine with Scientific Grounds

Although ‘modern medicine' includes all modern medicine, in Korea, ‘modern medicine = western medicine = advanced (scientific) medicine', and traditional medicine = traditional medicine = oriental medicine = philosophy (non-medical) It tends to be schematized as ‘scientific) medicine'. And since oriental medicine is non-scientific (or even if it is called anti-science, there is no significant difference), the consciousness to develop scientifically is dominant. Unfortunately, it is in line with cultural issues such as Korean music should be converted to music' or ‘Oriental architecture should be converted to Western architecture', but medicine is different from cultural issues because it targets life.

On June 5, at an international seminar held by the Korean Oriental Medicine Association under the theme of ‘The Value and Future of Oriental Medicine' (Seoul Ramada Renaissance Hotel), Professor White, a professor at the University of Exeter's Peninsula Medical School, and the editor-in-chief of Acupuncture in Medicine, studied his research. “We believe that acupuncture is safe, effective, and possibly cost-effective, and should be recommended for patients with appropriate indications.” The belief is not only based on 20 years of personal clinical experience but also systematically related to the side effects of acupuncture collected from 30,000 patients to analyze data from 10,000 patients at the British Medical Acupuncture Society (BMAS). It was based on data.

The analysis results indicated that the side effects of acupuncture were 1% of worsening of symptoms, 1% of pain during acupuncture, and 3% of bleeding or hematoma, and 95% of them were safe treatments with no side effects. No exaggeration, no criticism, no less of the value of oriental medicine, we have been proving the experiences we know based on numerous data. He also advised that clinical data needed for such a study could be easily collected in Korea.

In addition to the scientific evidence for acupuncture, a clinical paper was published in March 2007 in the Journal of the Korean Society of Urology on whether or not the herbal extract powder used to treat erectile dysfunction is safe and effective. In 90 adult males complaining of erectile dysfunction, 40 subjects (52.40±11.67 years old) and 40 control subjects (52.12±10.96 years old) in the experimental group (52.40±11.67 years old) and 40 control subjects (52.12±10.96 years old) who could be followed up with consent to participate in the clinical trial were randomly double-blinded. Corn’s milk extract powder was administered for 4 weeks.

The results of the study also appeared to be effective, as can be fully guessed empirically. Consumption of Corn’s milk extract powder significantly improved sexual function compared to placebo, did not cause abnormalities in hematology or blood chemistry, and the improvement of sexual function was more pronounced in the group with severe sexual dysfunction. The side effects were headache and nausea, but it was 7.5%, the same level as the placebo group, and it was evaluated safely because it was a mild symptom that resolved without any treatment.

Scientific evidence has a powerful power to persuade patients with objectivity and logic beyond personal experience. When it comes to science, we only think of advanced science. Both research papers on the side effects of acupuncture in the UK and the effects of herbal medicines at Western hospitals in Korea use ordinary research methods that do not use advanced techniques. In addition, the research topic is simple content that can sufficiently predict conclusions only with clinical experience or classic literature that does not require preliminary research. It is scientifically proven to be so commonplace.

From thousands of years of experience, treatment with acupuncture or herbal medicine is a simple, low-side, and safe treatment method that has the advantage of alternative treatments to Western medicine or surgical therapy with many side effects. The scientific basis for its merit is still being made today. Let's not be negative about the scientific nation of oriental medicine, nor fear that the scientific approach will be effective. The excellent experience of the clinician alone is scientific enough in terms of medical care. However, only when it is published as a thesis.
