Acupuncture – what is it and for what purposes?

 Acupuncture was discovered several thousand years ago in China and continues to enjoy unflagging interest today. It is used in the fight against pain, chronic diseases, and mental problems.

Acupuncture is a safe method of fighting many diseases. Gentle pricking of the body with special acupuncture needles is intended to change the body’s energy system, which is supposed to positively influence the imbalance that causes pain and many diseases. This method has many opponents and supporters, but the fact that it has survived for thousands of years may speak in its favor.

What does acupuncture help for?

Chinese medicine has classified places called acupuncture points. They are located all over the body (including the sole of the feet, on the spine, and around the ears). According to traditional acupuncture, there are about 360 such points on the human body. There are also somewhere, according to the theory, piercing could disturb the flow of energy and even lead to death. One of the newer methods referring to traditional acupuncture is electro-acupuncture. The difference is that the needles are connected to the pulse generator, which means that the patient receives a series of electrical pulses of different frequencies and intensities at the designated places. The side effects of acupuncture are currently unknown. However, there are a number of contraindications to performing treatments.

Types of acupuncture

The most popular types of acupuncture used by therapists today are:

foot acupuncture – on the sole of the feet there are about 36 pressure points responsible for the functioning of the knee joints, stomach, and spine;

ear acupuncture – auriculotherapy, i.e. piercing the ear with thin needles, is designed to fight, among others, alcohol problems, depression, neurosis, drug addiction, migraine headaches, high blood pressure, and nausea;

acupuncture for the spine – puncturing the area along the spine is designed to fight chronic back pain, muscle tension, and migraines;

acupuncture for weight loss – acupuncture is believed to accelerate the body’s metabolism. It is worth noting, however, that it can only be used as an additional method of fighting excess kilograms. Nothing can replace a balanced diet and regular exercise.

What and how does acupuncture treat?

According to a theory developed by acupuncture practitioners, pricking the body with needles works in three different ways. The first one tells about the local effect of pressure on the needles, which affects the expansion of blood vessels in a specific place. As a result, there are changes in the permeability of the punctured area vessels. Another theory speaks of a segmental response, which means that tissues located in the vicinity of the same or neighboring body metamers are stimulated. The third theory is that the hormones of happiness, or endorphins, are released while puncturing certain points on the body and stimulating certain brain centers.

The main effect of acupuncture is the analgesic effect. The indications for the procedure are headaches (including migraines), toothache and sinus pain, pain related to degeneration, muscle pain, attacks of kidney stones, cancer pain, and painful menstruation.

Acupuncture in pregnancy

The acupuncture method cannot be performed during the first trimester of pregnancy. However, at the end of the second trimester, it is possible to use this technique in the fight against urinary tract infections, vasculitis, and as an analgesic (painkillers must not be taken during pregnancy).

Side effects of acupuncture

The risk of complications after an acupuncture treatment is associated primarily with contraindications to its performance. It is not recommended to use needles to puncture the body in people with blood coagulation disorders (or under treatment with anticoagulants). This can result in bruising or bleeding on the body. Women with a similar risk are associated with menstrual bleeding. In order to avoid secondary inflammatory skin reactions, the treatment should exclude people with inflammatory skin lesions, including rosacea with purulent lesions. It is absolutely forbidden to use acupuncture in infants. In addition, it is not recommended for people in a state of intoxication, or with a pacemaker. The use of acupuncture to treat cancer-related pain raises many doubts.
